Pedestrian and Traffic Study Keewatin and Alexander

WHEREAS there are concerns from the seniors and residents in the Weston and Brooklands neighbourhood for a need to cross Keewatin Street at Alexander Avenue, a petition from the residents is attached hereto;

AND WHEREAS there are senior residents who live at Blue Bird Lodge located on Keewatin Street who attend Nor-West Co-op on Alexander Avenue to access the food and recreational programs;

AND WHEREAS there are residents in the Brooklands neighbourhood that attend the newly developed Nor-West Co-op Health Clinic located at the Blue Bird Lodge;

AND WHEREAS there are families in the Weston neighbourhood that walk and cycle to attend the Brooklands Elementary School;

AND WHEREAS the traffic lights at the intersection of Keewatin Avenue and Logan Street does not provide a safe and timely pedestrian crossing;

AND WHEREAS there is a desire to close the median boulevard on Keewatin Street at Alexander Avenue and install a lighted pedestrian crosswalk corridor on Alexander Avenue at Keewatin Street to facilitate the timely movement of pedestrian crossings;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Lord Selkirk-West Kildonan Community Committee recommends to the Standing Policy Committee on Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works that the Winnipeg Public Service be instructed to conduct a pedestrian and traffic study at the intersection of Alexander Avenue and Keewatin Street to facilitate the installation of a lighted pedestrian crosswalk corridor and possibly close the median boulevard on Keewatin Street at Alexander Avenue, and report back to the Standing Policy Committee on Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works within 120 days.
